About Us
Abney Orchestra was founded by Rachael Doyle in November 2003.
That first rehearsal comprised just 4 players.
Six weeks later they put on a Christmas concert at Abney URC and have never looked back.
Membership is now over 40 players and they are still going from strength to strength.
Rachael set up Abney Orchestra as a place people could get together and play no matter what their age or ability.
There are many youth orchestras where people can play up to the age of 21 but nothing people could move onto, Abney Orchestra was set up to fill that gap.
All players are encouraged to come and try their best, even if they have had a long gap since last playing, in a fun, friendly environment.
In July 2004 Abney Orchestra received a grant from Tameside council to purchase percussion instruments and stands so could now offer
opportunities to people who did not have their own instruments and also perform a much wider range of music.
In September 2008 the junior group was formed to accommodate absolute beginners up to grade 3 level.
We did this as we still wanted to encourage all levels of playing whilst moving the standard of the main orchestra higher.
The junior group comprises both children and adult beginners.
In September 2009 we started to offer the Trinity Guildhall Arts Awards qualification to under 25s in conducting which takes place in junior orchestra.
Abney Orchestra is a friendly and exciting place to be.
We play many popular classics and also a lot of film music, playing a variety of concerts each year in the Northwest, from carnivals to mayoral events to busking.
In 2010 we will be working with 3 diverse new composers to premier works specifically written for our players.
The main orchestra currently ranges in age from 10 to retired and ability grade 3 to diploma standard.
If you would like to join us to perform or would like more information on completing your Arts Award please do not hesitate to get in touch.
We are a "not for profit" amateur organisation.
